This is an active hiking adventure. We would like you to be comfortable with the following:

  • Hiking over rough and uneven terrain for 6–9 hours, covering distances of 7.4–13 miles (12–22 km) and hiking uphill to elevations of 3,000 feet (914 m)
  • Be prepared for strenuous physical activity and unpredictable weather
  • Be able to trek with a 20 L daypack
  • Being in a boat in open, choppy waters
  • Physical Rating: Challenging (Serious fitness level required. Trips are the most physically challenging with approximately 5 to 10 hours of physical activity on 5 of the days. These trips require a high degree of fitness and even if you exercise regularly, they typically will require more specific conditioning and a specialized training routine depending on the trip.)
  • Be able to take 3 short internal flights

Today you’ll fly to Chile’s Lake District, renowned for its lush farmlands, forests, lakes, and snow- capped volcanoes. After landing in Puerto Montt, we’ll drive to the town of Puerto Varas drop our bags and get ready for the morning adventure. Get your adrenaline pumping with a thrilling rafting experience on the Petrohué River in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. In the afternoon we will experience a unique culinary workshop where ingredients are sourced within a 100-kilometer radius. Guided by a local chef, harvest your own veggies and then learn to create traditional Chilean dishes that celebrate the region’s flavors. With the lake’s beauty as your backdrop, it’ll be a memorable and sustainable culinary adventure that connects you to the land and culture. Throughout this gastronomy experience, we will be supporting local producers, helping nearby farms and the regional economy.

CHILOÉ ISLAND PENGUINS AND CULTURE

Today we head to Chiloé Island by ferry. Enjoy spectacular views of the Andean range, the rustic villages of the island and UNESCO listed wooden church towers. After exploring the northern part of the island visiting local villages, we’ll have an oyster tasting. Then we’ll venture close to a breeding colony of Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins, among other species of birds and sea mammals of the southern Humboldt Current.

DESOLACIÓN TRAIL HIKING ADVENTURE: EXPLORE THE WILD

Today you’ll be trekking in the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, the first park to open in Chile, in 1926. This active hike covers 12kms of scenic routes, mostly on a gravel trail. The route begins with some steady uphill sections rewarding you with stunning views over the volcanoes and the surrounding lakes. As you reach the emerald waters of Lake Todos Los Santos where you end the hike, the impressive Andes Mountain Range emerges on the horizon. On your journey back to Puerto Varas you will visit Petrohue Falls, where waterfalls cascade through channels formed by a combination of lava flow and water erosion.

A DAY AT HUILLICHE TERRITORY & ALERCE FOREST

This unique adventure will take you to one of the most unknown corners of the Lake District to enjoy an unforgettable day. The first activity will be a soft hike through the temperate rainforest looking for the native flora and birds of this environment inside of Lahuen Ñadi Natural Monument, the last patch of Alerce (Fitzroya cupressoide) trees of the valley. We will spend time through the thick forest looking for the elusive Tapaculos and some specialties of this unique ecosystem. Finally, we save the best part where we will head to the Pargua region to learn the history, music, medicine and cuisine of the indigenous inhabitants of this region, the Huilliche people.

Embark on a breathtaking flight from Puerto Montt to either Puerto Natales or Punta Arenas, where you’ll be treated to the stunning vistas of Patagonia’s rugged landscape from above. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the heart of Patagonia with a visit to a traditional Patagonian ranch, known as an ‘Estancia. Here, you’ll experience the warmth of Patagonian hospitality as you partake in a time-honored tradition: a delectable asado de Cordero al palo, a succulent lamb barbecue cooked over an open flame. Savor the rich flavors of Patagonian cuisine while surrounded by the vast, untamed beauty of this remote region.

Hiking in the French Valley is an unforgettable experience that will take you through some of Torres del Paine’s most stunning landscapes, with the reward of breathtaking panoramic views. Enjoy sleeping under the stars in a luxury tent.

HIKE TO LAS TORRES LOOKOUT

We’ll get an early start toward the trailhead today. This challenging yet rewarding day takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush forests to rocky terrain, all culminating with an impressive view of the three granite towers that give the park its name. The trail begins at the Las Torres sector and leads you through the beautiful Ascencio Valley. As you ascend, you’ll pass the pristine rivers and witness the changing flora and fauna of the park. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the moraine, where you’ll encounter the glacial waters of Lake Torres and, finally, the base of the imposing spires. Reaching Las Torres is a truly awe-inspiring moment where you’ll see three immense granite towers with the colors of the lake complimenting them. It’s a beautiful sight and it provides an incredible backdrop for photographs.

HIKE PINGO VALLEY AND NAVIGATION TO THE GLACIER

Your day begins with a peaceful hike through the picturesque Pingo Valley. As you traverse this pristine landscape, you’ll be surrounded by lush forests, clear streams, and the possibility of spotting local wildlife. The valley’s serene environment makes it an ideal setting for a leisurely yet immersive hike. After your hike, prepare for navigation on stunning Lake Grey, getting you close to the awe-inspiring Grey Glacier, where you’ll be captivated by the towering ice walls and mesmerizing blue crevasses. It’s a rare opportunity to witness a glacier’s grandeur up close. After a day filled with exciting activities, you can unwind and enjoy the afternoon at the hotel’s spa, where you can take a dip in the heated pool and relax in the sauna. Enjoy a Farewell Dinner.

    *Cancellation and transfer schedules for certain group trips, as well as cruises, private departures, extensions, and Special Events are often more strict. These exceptions are clearly indicated in the detailed itineraries for each of these trips.

    Rates are based on group participation and no partial refunds will be given for unused trip arrangements for any reason whatsoever. Once you have been confirmed on a trip that requires a medical certificate signed by a doctor, normal cancellation penalties apply if your doctor does not sign the certificate.

    We highly recommend that all clients purchase trip cancellation insurance.

    TRAVEL INSURANCE

    We will do everything possible to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. However, all travel involves some degree of risk, and we strongly recommend that you take out appropriate travel insurance for your adventure. Your insurance protection should include cover for cancellation, medical and repatriation expenses, personal injury and accident, death and loss of personal baggage and money and personal liability. If you arrive early no problem, we will have your bags stored. World Nomads is one that many of our clients use.

    INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

    You are responsible for making your own arrangements flights to from Chile. There are many online consolidators for booking travel like kayak.com or expedia.com. Depending on your routing, it is necessary to depart from the U.S. one Day 1 of the trip itinerary.

    The name on your airline ticket must match the name on your passport exactly, and your passport must be valid for at least six months after your date of return to the U.S.

    Please do not purchase your tickets until you are confirmed on the trip. Once your tickets have been purchased, please send us a copy of your airline schedule. It is your responsibility to ensure your flight times coordinate with the arrival and departure logistics for this trip.
