Brave, Strong and Steady

Here we are again --- gung ho and ready to start a new year!  For most that can mean hitting the gym hard, weight loss goals, resolutions of eating better and fitting into those jeans you love so much but just can’t seem to button that top button.  Many of us will create a yearly plans or intentions; start out strong but over time drift back into the same patterns we have battled before.  Let’s face it – though beginning the new year with the best of intentions is a great place to start, it is important to remember that maintaining your health is a lifetime commitment.  There is no finish line.

The truth is that we, as a society, have grown accustomed to experiencing instant gratification. We want to see results and the FASTER the better J  However for most – it has taken a very long time to become unhealthy or out of shape. So why on earth should we think that we can change the course of our health over night?  It takes time to reverse the course of your prior life style but that journey can be an exciting one – if you are brave enough to experience it.

So after some personal reflection I have come up with my 2013 mantra - Be Brave, Strong and Steady.

I am fortunate to work with a diverse population - people of different ages, genders, abilities, goals etc.  There are a few I would call “warriors”.  An example would be a client that has been told they have a disease or problem that makes it hard for them to exercise.  Instead of becoming a prisoner to the disease they have chosen to focus on the steady improvements they can make to their health.  I have seen many clients transform OVER TIME and extend the strength, discipline and hard work that they practice into their everyday lives.  These warriors are examples of my 2013 mantra – They are Brave, Strong and Steady.

Whether it is showing up at a 5:30am boot camp, training for a specific sport or event, or staying active to help prevent disease, it takes effort – it takes dedication and it takes discipline. You have to KEEP showing up to make progress  (true for most aspects of life) and only then do we get to experience some joy from this hard work.

As many of you know, I am not one to sit in front of the TV much but one of the compromising joys of parenting has been to watch all of these cool Pixar movies J. Last month we were watching the movie Brave and my daughter, Orion asked me “what does brave mean, mommy?”  I instantly thought of my warriors, my boot campers – all of you.  You are all very brave and I feel fortunate to be part of this wonderful journey with you.

This final quote from the movie Brave really resonated with me…

“Some say fate is beyond our command, but I know better.  Our destiny is within us.  You just have to be brave enough to see it”

Here's to a terrific 2013 – may you be Brave, Strong and Steady!
